Earring-making is about making your own hooks for pierced earrings.
You can make them very easily with a super finding called the eye pin!
The eye pin is a piece of metal finished by a loop or an eye and it is used especially to connect two pieces of jewelry together.
Here, we use it to make hooks for sleepers or dangling earrings.
Sleepers has a simple bead, drop or charm attached to the hook and the dangling earrings are a bit longer and more elaborate. It can have chains, rows of beads or feathers, all kind of fancy stuff!
What we called dangling earrings are made in two parts:
- The hook which is put inside the ear.
- A hanging part is attached to the hook.
- Usually a jump ring is the link between the hook and the hanging part.
For those of you who are allergic to craft metal you can use sterling silver or gold or gold filled or hypoallergenic earwires but it is more expensive.
As charming-jewelry-making.com is about making jewelry with simple techniques and as possible with inexpensive findings and beads we mostly use craft eye pins to make our own earwires.
This is one of our favorites because it is a simple technique which can change entirely the style of the earrings.
Indeed, as you will see in the picture below, you can string a bead in your hook.
By doing this, you can coordinate the hook to the hanging part. You can match beads and play with colors.
It adds personality and character to the whole piece and speaking of design, it finishes nicely and neatly your jewelry. Isn't it cool?
