How-To-Make-Necklace
With Nylon Or Silk Thread

How-to-make-necklace with silk or nylon thread?

We made some jewelry using what we call "the fancy" knotting technique.

For example,

  • Look at the leaf pendant for jewelry making with yellow silk thread and glass pearls.
  • If you like gemstones, especially turquoise beads, click here.

All these jewelry are made with pre-carted silk in different color and sizes. Our free E-Book"Our Favorite Threads, Cords, Wire Findings For Beading, Bead Stringing, Wire Jewelry Making" will give more informations about silk and nylon threads.
You can also use spool thread and string your needle (depending of the thread's size).

If you want to know how-to-make-necklace or a bracelet using this type of thread, you will need to know how to finish it.

There are 2 types of findings:

  • Bead tips,
  • French wire/bullion.
  • You can simply finish your jewelry with a double knot, glue and hidden with a bead cap for example.

Note also that we have added a simple knotting technique for those of you who wish to knot pearls or beads.
You can also watch the video.

    Let's see how…

    Finishing With A Bead Tip

    findings-jewelry-making

Thread your needle (single or double thread, if you are not using a pre-carted thread) and make a double knot from about 2"-inch (5cm) of the tail. String the bead tip. the knot nests inside the "ball".

Make the first knot close to the bead tip

    • Make a large loop with the thread, place the awl or a long needle inside the loop ( like on the picture),
    • knotting-jewelry-making

      • hold the thread really tight with one hand and slide the awl close to its thinnest point against the bead tip with the other hand and pull tight.
      • String a bead and make another bead.

Finishing With French Wire

  • Put a needle in the thread and string on carefully a tiny a tiny piece(1/4 inch- long) of French wire, also called Gimp.
Slide it carefully close to the end of the thread (leave 5cm of tail),
  • place your clasp or jump ring in the middle of the tiny piece of bullion and loop.
  • Make a knot,
  • string a bead and continue knotting if you want or just string your beads.

  • Cut some nylon strand according your desire length (add 8"- inch or 20cm),
  • String your beaded strands, put a piece of tape on each side so the beads do not fall apart.
  • Take a long eye pin and make a loop as you can see in the picture.
  • Pass your leaving tail through few beads, make a knot, pass through few beads and trim.

If the "wire loop" is hidden with a cone, you don't need to use French wire to secure your loop. If it is not the case, you should add some bullion to secure and embellish your work.
