Knot-Tying-Instructions
For Jewelry Making
Knot-Tying-Instructions is divided in different sections
Basic Macrame knots.
- flat-knot-tying also called reef knot.
- Spiral or Granny knot.
Basic Chinese Knots
- Snake knot.
- Double coin knot.
- Double connection knot also called Josephine knot.
- Phoenix Tail Knot.
The square knot technique also called reef knot is simple but essential to make jewelry.
As you can see here, not only you can use this technique to make knots in between each pearl or bead but also to finish properly any type of jewelry including beading techniques if you are using silk, cotton, nylon, elastic or fisherman thread.
By making a tight square knot you will secure your jewelry in other word, the knot will not fall apart.
It is difficult to make a clear boundary between macrame, Chinese knots as a lot of knots are similar.
Square knot is called flat knot in macrame and Chinese knotting. In that case the knot is made around a "base cord".
A spiral knot variation of flat knot. The knot is tied only in one side.
We will start the Chinese knots with 3 well known knots ( snake, double coin, double connection knots) and the phoenix tail knot which I like very much because it is simple and can be used multiple ways.
A double connection knot has an X shape and is very stable.
The double coin knot (Josephine knot) symbolizes prosperity and long life.
With the snake knot, you can make rounded cord necklaces or bracelets.
With the phoenix tail knot, you will make flat/rounded cord necklaces or bracelets.
More About Knot-Tying-Instructions
Tightening in the hands or using a cork board?
-
If you are a beginner, you should tie the knots on a cork board with pins to hold the cord, this is a good way to see the tying and weaving process.
Tightening
-
Practice and concentrate during tightening: work slowly.
- Don't hesitate to pin your work step by step following the videos.
- Be careful when taking off the pins off the cork: unpin with one hand and stabilize your work with the other hand.
What types of beads can you use?
- Beads with big holes: wood, glass, recycled glass, ceramic, metal and some gemstones like jadeite.
Cords
Lets talk a little about cords. You can use any type of cord which can be tied: satin, cotton, leather, polyester.
You can start with a thick cord as it is a good way to see and understand the weaving. You can use a satin cord but make sure it is firm enough and not too slippery.
I like to use satin cord because you can seal the ends easily after trimming with a lighter. With other cords, you will need to make few sewing points (and it takes time!).
Finishing
- Trim the cord leaving a tiny ( 2 to 3mm) tail.
- Cut the cord ends on the diagonal and seal them with a flame. Wisp the end with the blue part of a lighter's flame one second. Blow on it and adjust the shape with your fingers. Be careful it can burn!
Not for Children.
It is easier to move the cords with diagonal cuts. That is important for more intricate knots.
- Tweezes can be helpful too.
