Basics Informations

Polymer is plastic made with PVC and a platicizer. This one adds flexibility to the plastic. Polymer is white, color pigments are added to give colors. It is malleable and it is fused into plastic after baking.
There are different brands of polymer clay ( Fimo, Sculpey, Kato, Cernit
).
Each one has his own characteristics and unique colors. Some brands like Fimo for example has both classic (hard) and soft clays.
Try different brands and choose the one you prefer.
The basics for easy polymer clay projects:
- Wash your hands before and after the work.
- Preparing the clay
It must be soften by kneading with your hands. If it is too hard, add one or two drops of oil. When it is very soft and flexible, you can make a "ball", it is the very first step for nice and cool polymer-clay-projects!
- Work surface
You will need to work on a clean surface like a piece of wax paper or a plastic sheet with your tools nearby.
- Tools

A rolling pin is used to flatten the clay. You can also use a pasta machine.
A pin tool like a skewer or an awl for example is used to make holes.
Tissue blade and craft knifes are used to shape and cut the clay.
- Baking the clay
Each brand has its own baking temperatures. Follow the manufacturer's instructions carefully, ploymer clay becomes toxic if the temperature and the timing are not respected.
It is better to bake your items in a oven dedicated only to polymer clay in a tray covered by aluminium foil or wax paper. The space must be well ventilated.
Double check the temperature with at least two different thermometers
With this material, you can make different types of beads and also molds to make your own charms ans pendants.
We hope you will enjoy these polymer clay projects, with your imagination, you will design unique jewelry!
- Cool tips
You can buy colored clay or if you prefer, you can also add natural pigments to white clay and create your own colors. Scratch some colored chalk (100% natural of course) and add the "powder" to the white clay, it makes beautiful colors. We love it!
